Yes!

12Jun08

Today is a landmark for two reasons.

1. I have lost some weight! Yay. I know because now I can get into the ‘Close Guantanamo Bay’ t-shirt I purchased some time ago from the American Civil Liberties Union.

2. The day I decide to wear said t-shirt this happens. A step in the right direction. We’ll close it! Oh yes we will. Sign the petition today.

I watched Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium this week - it’s a good movie. Not a great movie  - had they been a little more daring with it and less mainstream I think it would have been. Anyway there was one scene in the movie that really spoke to me and has been in my mind for the last couple of days which I would like to share it with you. (possible spoiler alert follows)

Something I believe very strongly in is closing Guantánamo Bay.

What’s happening at Guantánamo is a national shame. Convictions can be based on evidence derived from torture, hearsay and secret evidence.

Many of the accused were held in secret prisons, denied access to lawyers for years and tortured. Basic human rights violated.

The proceedings are subject to unlawful political influence and, after years without a single trial completed, are now being rushed through to sway public opinion before the November elections.

This is why it’s time we close Guantánamo.

Please sign the petition and take a stand for justice

A Historic Day

05Jun08

YES WE CAN!!!! A wonderful day - I will be sending money to Obama’s Presidential campaign, even though I can not vote for him. He is a beacon of hope after all these terrible terrible years with Bush.

Obama makes me want to be an American because he stands for the America I believe in.

I think I am going to walk down the aisle to this:

and back down it as a Mrs to this:

It’s getting closer as Crate and sodding Barrel kindly pointed out when I logged on to edit our registry today (guilt + registries = bad times). 100 and fifty something days. Great. Thanks.
As I may have mentioned before our colour scheme is red, white and blue - yes, we know. We are desperately trying to make it not look like a fourth of July party but still using the elements from both our native country flags. I thought it was cute a couple of months ago. White is going to be the dominant colour. Red and Blue the accents if you will. None of this:

Although you can get some awesome patriotic favors.. that’s another story. I’ll save it for the 4th of July.

I love this wedding held by two professional video gamers at San Fran zoo - everything from the invites to the official entrance to the centerpieces was totally RAD!!

Read more about it here.

After a shaky start I managed to get the Gocco up and running to get our napkins made. The design which is from Sailor Jerry - our wedding has a slight nautical theme - is hand printed on 100% recycled napkins from Whole Foods.

I honestly wish my intended and his family had not had their hearts set on a big wedding as I would have been happy with a very intimate ceremony and then a nice meal out. It’s all well and good wanting a big wedding and having the luxury of using one of Chris’s families beautiful garden but now we have to rent every knife and fork, make sure we have enough chairs, etc etc - stuff a traditional venue would cover.

We are going for a simple look to enhance the nature settings of the beautiful garden and forgoing a lot of the traditional stuff but it’s still a big headache. One that I am not so good at sharing so I am organising pretty much everything - its hard for me to give it up - I have been very independent my whole life. Yeah, yeah control freak.

So for inspiration I have been reading wedding blogs and sites.. some of them make me come out in hives but if you really look there are some great ones out there (see links side bar). Continue reading ‘Cookie Monster’
